Jethro Tull is the rock band founded and leaded in 1967 by Ian Anderson who characterised the band with his voice, flute playing and amazing live performances. The band reached the peak of success in the early 70s when, with the release of the albums “Benefit”, “Aqualung”, “Thick as a Brick” and “Living in the Past” they sold until 1972 more than 60 million albums worldwide.
Jethro Tull was the first big name for Francesco Sanavio, who was the first promoter to bring them to Italy in 1971. That year they did two dates: January 31st in Milan at Teatro Smeraldo and February 1st in Rome at Teatro Brancaccio.
In 1972 and even more in 1973 the band was incredibly famous in Italy and the concerts registered record sold outs.
In 1972 the Italian tour started in Milan on January 31st and continued in Rome on February 1st, Bologna on the 2nd (where they did two sold out shows, one in the afternoon at 5.30 pm and one at 9 pm) on the 3rd in Treviso, on the 4th in Varese and ended in Novara on the 5th. When the band arrived at the Railway Station in Bologna the fans where already there waiting for them and literally rushed them.
In 1973 the band reached the maximum success after the release of the album “Thick as a Brick”, famous for only including one song. They did the Italian tour in March with the first date in Vicenza on the 15th, then Rome on the 16th, Bologna 18th and 19th and Milan on the 20th. That tour was an incredible success. 4.000 people couldn’t get in at the sold out shows in Bologna and at the Palaeur in Rome they registered a record of sales with 23.000 people.
Here is a rare video of Jethro Tull live concert on March 19th at the Palasport in Bologna.
